Concert with Kvonn (Faroese folk group)

Kvonn is group of musicians from the Faroe Islands that plays traditional and contemporary folk music from Scandinavia. Kvonn’s repertoire includes music composed by the band members, as well as traditional
tunes.

Based in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic Ocean between Iceland, Norway and Scotland, Kvonn has developed a wind-blown style of its own.
The band’s repertoire includes music composed by the band members, as well as traditional folk music from Scandinavia including the neighbouring Shetland Islands, and tunes from the 18th century notebook
of Faroese musician and scholar Jens Chr. Svabo.

Kvonn has performed at events world wide, including Umeå Folkmusikfestival (Sweden), Potsdam Festspiele (Germany), Isla Del Sol (Bolivia), NEFFA (USA), Halkær Festival (Denmark), Reykjavík Folk Festival (Iceland), Tauranga Festival (New Zealand), Scenderman (Bulgaria), Osaka (Japan), Illawarra Folk Festival (Australia), Qaanaaq (Greenland), Summartónar (Faroe Islands), Artinscena (Italy) – playing at folk festivals, dances, clubs, and concerts and conducting educational programs in schools and universities.

Three of the musicians of Kvonn: Sharon Weiss, Ívar Bærentsen and Kristian Blak, are regular members of the international, Faroe-based group Spælimenninir, that since 1977 also has toured widely. Since their
early teens, both Angelika Nielsen and Mikael Blak have performed often with Spælimenninir.

Kvonn has released CD “Hvonn” (2007) and “Einglarót” (2014).

Kristian Blak is band leader of world music band Yggdrasil. Angelika Nielsen and Mikael Blak also play with Yggdrasil and appear on Yggdrasil’s recordings Risastova (2006), Askur
(2007), Seta (2009), Travelling (2011), Dímun (2014), Lipet Ei (2016) – nominated for Nordic Counsil Music Prize 2017.

Kvonn (also spelled Hvonn) is the Faroese name for the plant Angelica archangelica)
